NASCLA® Contractor Licenses

The NASCLA Accredited Examination Program was designed to reduce redundant licensing requirements and assist contractors who need to be licensed in multiple jurisdictions. You will find the information you need from the Licenses offered and which NASCLA Accredited Examination to apply for your license within each accepting regulatory agency below or you can visit NASCLA®.

The State of Florida has Electrical Endorsement Agreements with California, Colorado, Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Texas.

Electrical Candidate Bulletin Information | Commercial General Candidate Building Bulletin Information

Commercial General Building Contractor

A general building contractor who desires to perform electrical; plumbing; heating, ventilating and cooling; piping; or general engineering contracting work as defined in this rule; shall obtain a license in those classifications. The “General Building Contractor” classification applies to work on both commercial and private properties.

Electrical Contractor

Install, erect, repair or alter electrical equipment for the generation, transmission or utilization of electrical energy and work incidental to the undertaking.

Electrical Journeyman Contractor

“Electrical Journeyman Contractor” Shall include installing electrical wiring, apparatus, or equipment lighting, beating, or power or control covered by this chapter. He or she shall work under a master or state certified electrical contractor.

Residential Electrical Contractor

Includes installation, repair, alteration, addition to, replacement of or design of electrical wiring, fixtures, appliances, apparatus, raceways, conduit, or any part thereof, in a 1, 2, 3, or 4 family residence not exceeding 2 stories in height, and accessory use structures in connection with the residence. The electrical service installed or worked upon is limited to a single-phase, 400-ampere single service.

States Accepting and Administering NASCLA® Exams for Commercial General Building

  • Alabama: Administers and Accepts NASCLA® since September 2009
  • Arizona: As of November 1, 2017, Arizona began administering and accepting this examination as an option in lieu of the state-specific trade examinations for the B-1 and B-2 General Commercial Contracting Classifications
  • Georgia: Administers and Accepts NASCLA® since November 2010
  • Mississippi: Administers and Accepts NASCLA® since May 2010
  • South Carolina: Administers and Accepts NASCLA® since May 2010
  • Virgin Islands: Administers and Accepts NASCLA® since February 2013
  • Arkansas: Accepting the Accredited Examination in lieu of the Arkansas Business and Law Examination
  • Florida: As of March 1st 2019 Florida is Accepting the Accredited Examination in lieu of the Florida Trade Examination. A Florida Business/Finance portion and Florida Building Code portion are still required.
  • Louisiana: as of September 2, 2016, accepted for both the Commercial Building Construction and the Residential Building Contractor Classifications
  • Nevada: Accepting as of December 2013
  • North Carolina: Accepted for both the Commercial Building Construction and the Residential Building Contractor Classifications
  • Tennessee: Accepts NASCLA®
  • Utah: As of April 2015 (Comparable to the Utah B100 Exam)
  • Virginia: As of January 1, 2016 (Comparable to the Commercial Building Classification)
  • West Virginia: Accepting as of September 1st 2013

  • Florida: As of June 2020 Florida Accepted Examinations for Endorsement on the Florida Residential Electrical Specialty classification: Residential Electrical Contractor
